CGI Web Hosting Reviews
Many, if not all, paid Web Hosting sites include CGI as part of their Hosting services. Free Web Hosting sites do not usually include CGI as part of their service or, if they do, require your website to display their ads as part of the “Free” Hosting. CGI Web Hosting sites will have a cgi-bin directory at the base of the directory tree where executable files are stored required for CGI.
Along with CGI, most of the Top Web Hosting sites also support PHP, Perl, Python, Ruby on rails, etc. These are all important factors when deciding on which hosting solution is best for you.

CGI – Common Gateway Interface
CGI is a standardized protocol for application software to interface with a web or information server. Another way to put this is that CGI exchanges data between the server (in this case a remote hosting service which is hosting your domain name or URL) and a web client (which would be a browser). CGI is a protocol that sends data back to a web server where a program or script can be processed.
CGI is not a programming language but a way of connecting your web pages to programs that run on the web server. CGI Scripts can be written in a wide variety of computer languages and is often dependent on the software that is available on the server. Some examples of these languages include C++, Java, Visual Basic, etc.

CGI Internet History
Back when the World Wide Web was born there was 1 web server and 1 web client. This web server (called httpd) was developed by Ari Luotonen of CERN (Centre d'Etudes et de Recherche Nucléaires) in Geneva, Switzerland. When development funding from CERN ceased it was taken over by a software development group called NCSA (National Center for Supercomputing Applications) which developed the worlds first web browser, Mosaic.
With a web browser it was now possible to retrieve documents and images off of an httpd server instead of files being sent to a user. Soon the vast amount of information and resources that were made available made it necessary to create search engines. Search engines required a user to submit data and the server needed to process this data and return the required information back to the user. This required the development of a standard protocol without rewriting the entire source code. CGI was born. Developed by NCSA, CGI became a standard for interfacing applications with information servers (commonly web servers) and generating dynamic information.
The developers of Mosaic would later go on to write the Netscape client.
Today there are about 40 million CGI Scripts out in the virtual universe and still there are a few things that only CGI can do. Because of this and the millions of legacy scripts out there, CGI and CGI Web Hosting will continue to play an important role in the way we access information over the world wide web.
